This is a tribute to the Big Muff guitar pedal that Ezra Koenig included in the Only God Was Above Us “Little Poem of Influences.” Just like the band, the pedal was originally created in New York City, and whether one was actually used on the distorted guitar that appears on tracks like “Capricorn” or not, the gnarly tones that the pedal is capable of were clearly an influence on the sound of the band’s fifth album.
The knob titles on the pedal are a reference to the rubric that Ezra made between Father of the Bride and OGWAU to describe the band’s albums; originally consisting of “GORP”, “preppy”, “hippie”, and “goth,” he later replaced “GORP” with “sunshine” and “preppy” with “prep.” Explaining the rubric to Blackbird Spyplane, he said:
“The idea was that the first two albums are Preppy-GORP…there was a kind of sunshiney, feel-good quality. Then Modern Vampires of the City was Preppy-Goth. And Father of the Bride was Hippie-GORP. So I was thinking maybe this new album would be Hippie-Goth.”
